This image shows the aftermath of the July 3, 1997 derailment of an A train near the 135th Street station in Harlem, when the train passed through a misaligned switch and the last car was forced onto a different track, tearing it apart as it struck tunnel columns and walls. Despite the dramatic wreckage, only 15 people were injured and no fatalities occurred. After visiting the scene, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani described the destruction as “unbelievable” and called the absence of deaths “an absolute miracle.”
