ANNA! drawing on a wall

ABOUT

ANNA!

Artist, graffiti writer, filmmaker, writer. New York.

On advertising, gender, and what it means to be seen.

Manifesto

The name is the work.

I. Square footage

The city is sold by the square foot. A bus shelter panel is leased by the week. A billboard over Houston Street is leased by the month. Visibility in New York is a commodity, priced by traffic count and sightline, and almost all of it is bought by corporations.

Graffiti is the only advertising nobody paid for. A tag occupies the same surface as a lease and refuses the transaction. It sells nothing except the fact of the writer. That is why it is buffed within days while the ad beside it stays up all year. The city does not object to the image. It objects to the unpaid image.

When I paint over a bus ad, I am not defacing the frame. I am pointing at it. The frame was always the content.

II. Gender

Graffiti is an archive of names, and most of those names belong to men. The rooftop, the tunnel, the train yard: these are places where the right to be seen is earned through risk, and risk has been coded as masculine. John Berger wrote that men act and women appear. A woman on a rooftop with a roller is acting.

I lived for a year and a half in an all-male flophouse on the Bowery. I made my name in a culture built mostly by men. Both are institutions that assume who belongs inside them. Neither was built for me. I stayed, and I signed it.

ANNA! is a woman’s name written at the scale of a brand. ANNA GANG multiplies it: fifty women with the same name, so no single Anna can be dismissed as the exception. The tag stops being a signature and becomes a census.

III. The second wall

A wall is seen for as long as it lasts. Then it is buffed, painted over, or demolished. The photograph outlives it. Now the photograph is taken on a phone, posted, and seen by more people in one night than the wall saw in its whole life.

This changes what a wall is. The physical surface becomes the first draft. The image in your hand becomes the edition. Being seen in person and being seen on a screen are different acts. One requires you to be there. The other requires only that you were there once, long enough to be recorded.

Graffiti was always a technology of visibility for people who were not supposed to be visible. The iPhone did not invent that. It extended the wall into every pocket and made the buff incomplete.

IV. What is left

Advertising rents the city’s attention. Graffiti takes it back and gives it away. I am interested in that theft, in who is allowed to commit it, and in what survives it. Usually it is a name, a photograph, and a woman who refused to leave.

Biography

Anna Barratt, known as ANNA!, is a graffiti artist, painter and filmmaker on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Her tags, rollers and bus ad takeovers run across downtown, including the Bowery/Houston Wall.

In 2023 Page Six and Artnet News identified her as the artist tagging Anna Delvey’s door. The New York Post covered her part in the turf war over the Bowery wall.

She created, hosted and produced ANNA TELEVISION, a thirteen-episode public-access series on Manhattan Neighborhood Network. She started ANNA GANG, a crew of about fifty women named Anna. Her short film ANNA! in Underland screened in New York in 2025.
